After the disaster of a trip last July, I decided to try my luck last week since almost everything was still closed.
It payed off as I was able to catch and release many trout with fly and bubble and my go to - gold or copper Phoebe lure. At one point I was getting a hit or hook-up on every cast at me favorite spots on the lake. Just like old times.
The streams were not flowing as they should be at this time of year and did not produce anything. I'm guessing the streams will not be stocked due to lack of flow.
The weather was not bad, although small amount of snow up high and rain in the lower elevations.
I was loosing faith after many trips with very low catch results. I don't need to keep trout unless they look like they might not survive a release. I would just like to at least see fish. Realizing of course these fish are all stocked everywhere.
Last July, people in California were trying to escape the tyranny of the people they put in office to govern them due to covid 19. We live in Arizona, so we had no idea how bad it was in California but soon learned after we packed up the family and 7 grandchildren to do our yearly camping trip to Rock Creek Lake. After arriving, we found no open sites anywhere. Drove around in 2 vehicles for about 6 hours until finding a spot at French Camp. A good site actually and the kids had a great campout as children don't worry about all the problems adults do.
No fish caught by anyone but hopefully it didn't affect the grandkids as they have experienced good fishing in the past at the lake.
I pray for all of you in California to get back to normal. Take off the masks, open up business and get on with life. I just went into Home Depot in Lake Havasu and the staff are mask free. Many businesses here have been mask free from the beginning. We have had thousands of Californians coming here the last year. Buying homes, building homes, using our ball parks for their children to play. Our restaurants have been packed to capacity with 2 hours waits to get a seat (no spacing). Every weekend we had hundreds of cars parked at our ball fields holding baseball & softball tournaments. Thank God they had a free State next door to allow them to play and enjoy their freedom.
Good news: I heard on the radio while I was there that fishing license purchases are up. California lost over one million license purchases in the last 20 years. Maybe this will result in more trout stocks.
