I just drove up there, got as far as Aspen, didn't want to get in their way, so I stopped. Lightning strike started it, it's on the East side of the road (left as you go up), not near the campgrounds. Sorta between Big and Iris, but up the hill a ways. Just as I got there, the wind kicked up, the fire flared a little, lots more smoke. The big helicopter flew over and dumped on it, knocked it down pretty well...they're doing relays between Crowley and there. Campgrounds are still open, but that could change.
My Grandmother used to call this the "asbestos forest", since it rarely burned.... it still holds true, in my mind. If this fire was on the West side, it would be a lot bigger than this after 24 hours.
More to come.

Thanks for the updates on Facebook Scout. All the campgrounds have been evacuated as of now, French Camp has to be out by 10am tomorrow. Guess they are staging at Palisades so that is good. Hope they cam get it under control tonight.

Not much, if any smoke to be seen this evening from my back yard in Hilton Creek, a good sign.

Thank you for the updates, looked pretty impressive from the few shots posted yesterday! Hoping to bring the kids up to the canyon for a few days next week camping. How long do these evacs usually play out?
Thanks again,

I just scouted around (get it?) as much as I could, with the roadblocks and everything, here's the latest. No smoke visible, a very good thing. A couple of big water dropping helicopters were flying back and forth between Crowley and the canyon this morning, dropping on hot spots. I can still hear airplanes flying around, but no idea what they're doing. Not much wind, some clouds building up ( I wish could "order up some rain".). The road is closed at the bottom, not sure if they're letting anybody up. I'm dying to get up there to really see what happened. Found the camp host at Tuff , he says, as of now, they're planning on reopening the campgrounds on Monday, hope so, for Packer,.....don't give a rip about tourists....

This pic was taken Wednesday morning, that was pretty much all that was burning, then the wind kicked up and everything exploded...I was encouraged when I first saw it, then everything went to hell. Back to the "asbestos forest" theory...I still say, if this had been on the west side, it would have been a lot bigger than 170 acres, especially with the winds they had on Wed.

Hey Scout, any updates on road opening? Parents were headed up Wednesday and then the fire kicked back up so didn’t make it up the canyon. Only one update a day from incident command so not much info coming thru. They are not letting any cabin owners up as far as I am aware, its a hard closure.
