What are your plans for opening season?

In the thirty some odd years that Ive lived here, I've fished one Opener..that one time convinced me that it wasn't worth it. I can understand the attraction, and, in many cases, tradition behind it, but didn't have much luck myself. Fly fishing doesn't generally pick up til the temperatures climb a little, and things start to hatch. One thing I've wanted to do for years is to go down to Crowley with a DFG Biologist I know, he takes informal creel surveys, and just gets a general idea as to what's going on out there. DFG had Covid restrictions for volunteers, meaning I couldn't go down there in close proximity to the biologist...dumb. They just changed things, with any luck, maybe I'll be able to go this year. I'm hoping to convince him to start an official survey of Crowley's fishery..when I was a kid, 15 pound trout were a regular occurence...last year, the biggest fish I heard of was around 3 pounds...! Something is wrong out there. I don't care about the Lake itself, but I do fish the Owens, and what happens in the Lake affects what happens up there.

That would be great. I remember catching large fish off Alligator point in the 70's. Maybe more fishing pressure not allowing the time to grow??

Lots of factors, that's what I'd like to find out. I still think opening the Upper Owens all year didn't help at all.

I think that there are a whole list of things influencing the decline. Year round seasons, increased pressure, DFG no long stocking trout capable of reproducing, and in general lesser quality fishermen. Too many out there could give a crap about regulations and taking too many fish or mishandling the ones that they do release. When the DFG releases a ton of non-reproducing trout to feed an the limited amount of minnows and small fry it's bound to have an impact.

All valid concerns. One thing a lot of people don't realize is that Inyo and Mono Counties both stock diploid (non sterile) trout, they have for years. The main reason they started stocking triploid (sterile) trout was the fear of hybridizing with native trout. Inyo and Mono have no native trout, except Goldens in the southern waters, and Cutthroat North of Conway Summit...those areas still get triploids. It took awhile to convince DFG that it was a problem. The main problem in Crowley, that nobody wants to talk about, is the perch. Now they're in the East Walker, and June Lake Loop. Not a good thing.

I thought that they were still stocking sterile trout in Inyo and Mono Counties. I wish that they would figure out a way to economically and consistently raise native fish for stocking. I know that they have been saying for years that they will be raising Kern River Rainbows at the Kernville hatchery but I don't think that they have actually done so yet.

I was on the Mono County Fisheries commission for awhile, before it got disbanded. I never could figure out why DFG never told people that they were stocking diploids...I double checked with the biologist I know, they are. I know that DFG has been working on raising Lahontan Cutthroat for stocking, they are raising Browns for stocking, but I'm not familiar with anything down South. I had a good talk with the DFG biologist a few days ago, the hatcheries are full of trout, all have been vaccinated...yes, they gave each one a shot, sounds unbelievable, but I once spent an afternoon cutting the adipose fins off of 4" Brown trout at Hot Creek Hatchery...5000 of them...the things they do to bring us fish. He said they are getting close to doing some serious studies on Crowley to find out what's wrong out there. I hope to be involved with it, I'll let everybody know.

Wonder how many are going this year with lack of open lakes. What is open will probably be even more crowded, as if that is even possible!

The biggest problem, above and beyond the fact that there's no place to fish, is that there's no place to stay. No campgrounds, no resorts, roads still unplowed, no dispersed camping. Thinking about renting the front yard to somebody with a tent. It will be an interesting, and hopefully entertaining weekend.
